Assault on Thanksgiving in California

Claremont, a community southeast of Los Angeles, is now the scene of a fight over a Thanksgiving celebration that was scheduled to be held by two local elementary schools. The planned event would have involved some 150 elementary schoolchildren from Condit Elementary School and nearby Mountain View Elementary School. The program, which was in the preparation stages, would have involved the kids dressing up as Indians and Pilgrims as they shared a Thanksgiving dinner. In preparing for the event, the children were busy at work cutting out their costumes from paper. Then it all came crashing down.

What happened was that one woman, the mother of one of the children, wrote a 2 1/2 page letter to the Claremont School Board, protesting the event as being denigrating and demeaning to Native Americans. As a result, the costumes have been scrapped by the school board.

In the letter, the woman, who is an Asst Professor of English at the University of California at Riverside and apparently of Indian heritage, described the Thanksgiving dinner as a "celebration of genocide". She compared the depiction of the first Thanksgiving dinner to showing slaves having dinner with their masters and Jews having dinner with Nazis.

On Thursday evening, the Claremont School Board held a public meeting, in which several parents showed up to defend having the event. They were told by the Board that the decision had already been made to have the students dressed in their normal clothes-and that no costumes would be permitted.

Whatever happened to Native Americans in our history, what in the world is wrong with showing a historical event that was conducted in friendship-before the wars began? Is this the first step in an all out assault on Thanksgiving-much as we have seen with Christmas? That this cowardly and/or politically correct school board would capitulate to one activist professor is absurd. Did she threaten them with a lawsuit? So now, in the interest of "sensitivity", to use the Board's own words, the event has been reduced to something as meaningless as an outing to Chucky Cheese.

  1. The PC police are at it again. One asshole parent complains and the rest have to follow the minority.

And people wonder why the US will be a 3rd world nation in 4 years.

  2. Perhaps Whites can begin saying that the Mayflower arrived, the passengers immediately began planting crops, began a tradition of thanking God for their journey and it became known as Thanksgiving - no help needed from anyone. You know how industrious those European Whites are.

Our schools are America's biggest problem.

  3. Your thoughts about kindergartners dressing up like Pilgrims and Indians to celebrate a great national holiday are off the scale negative. It is people like you that continue to cause us to be a less hospitable society, You now have split the community. Why, because your momma was an Indian. What a lame excuse!

I am 65 years old and I dressed up in kindergarten to celebrate Thanksgiving and it did not harm me or my family! I went to school and graduated with a degree in History with an emphasis on US history so before you call be “white trash”, you are the one who needs to reexamine why you did this to the school and the children. These are not young adults taking a college course about our history. Why you liberal progressives continue to use revisionist history to destroy our culture and our country is beyond me.

Maybe instead of trying to destroy a long held tradition, you could have asked to assist and see how enthused the children are about their heritage. Kindergarten is not the place to tell youngsters about what may have happened four hundred years ago! You, obviously, are entitled to your opinion but this is not the time nor place. So shut up and enjoy the freedom that comes with the holiday.

Also, how you became a college professor os beyond me. Your views on the subject are out of touch with reality. You ought to be ashamed of yourself!

  4. Many of the parents are revolting against the school board. They are going ahead with the costumes and marching to the site of the dinner with their kids. It will be interesting to see what the idiots at the school board will do.

  5. Well said Don. How they become college professors is easy. If you don't follow PC and are not of the liberal bent, then forget about a doctorate. Especially in the no brainer fields like teaching or sociology.
