I first saw this painting in the late 60's when a tour of Van Gogh's work was touring the US and I went with my aunt to see the exhibit. My first and only reaction to it was to stand in front of it and exclaim:
Many, many years ago I walked all unsuspecting around a corner of Melbourne's cultural centre (or whatever it was called back then) and came face-to-face with Rodin's 'Balzac'. I stood there for over an hour, suspended somewhere between shock and awe and I don't think I ever quite recovered.....
